A topic in DITA is the most granular entity of information. ing to the DITA specifications, a topic should be short enough to be easily readable, but long enough to make sense on its own. To cover separate content such as concepts, tasks, reference, the DITA standard specifies different information types.
The task topic includes sections for describing the context, prerequisites, actual steps, expected results, troubleshooting, example, and expected next steps for a task.
DITA includes three main topic types: Task, Concept, and Reference. Tasks are used to describe how to perform a procedure. Concepts present descriptive information so the reader can understand the background and context of a subject. Reference topics provide detailed facts, often in a table.
Concepts explain and provide answers that are generally applicable to almost all cases while contexts describe the stories and events in which explorations are conducted just to understand the explanations of a phenomenon.
As a metaphor, you can think of subjects as on the ground and concepts as in the air. Some terms can be both concepts and subjects, such as evolution. Evolution as a field of study within biology is a subject, but evolution as a description of the behavior of economic systems is a concept.
The concept taxonomy not only has more concepts available, but it has more specific concepts to define the standard. The topic does define the standard, but it is more general or broad.
The DITA concept document type uses the concept information type. Concept topics are specialized from the base topic information type. They include the standard topic elements, including the short description, prolog, a body, and related links.
Create a reusable topic Navigate to the Repository. Click the contextual menu next to the reuse folder. Choose Create Dita Topic. Populate the fields in the Create New Topic dialog. For example: Click Create. Add content to the topic as required.
