Nowadays, empty tin cans are, generally speaking, crafted out of any thin metal. This can range from aluminum to steel or iron. Although not always, these small tin cans often come with a tin-plating. Ever since the 1960s, aluminum has by far become the number one choice for producing small tin cans.
Tin is found principally in the ore cassiterite (tin(IV) oxide). It is mainly found in the tin belt stretching through China, Thailand and Indonesia. It is also mined in Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. It is obtained commercially by reducing the ore with coal in a furnace.
However, Aluminum tins and Aluminum bottles are outperforming and replacing traditional tin packaging. Before docHubing a final verdict between aluminum vs. tin for your products packaging, it is best to learn more about both metals separately, discussing their properties, benefits, and drawbacks, as mentioned below.
High purity aluminum may be an alternative to Tin. Aluminum has similar mechanical properties, has been used as a brazing media and offers superior corrosion resistance.
It is chiefly found in the form of the oxide, cassiterite (tinstone), which may be regarded as the sole important source of the metal. The mineral stannite, a sulfide of copper, iron, and tin, is of little significance as an ore mineral. Tin is a bright, white metal, malleable and ductile.
Losing your TIN can be a hassle, but it is not the end of the world. Fortunately, getting a TIN replacement is a straightforward process that you can do on your own.
Raw Materials There are nine tin-bearing ores found naturally in the earths crust, but the only one that is mined to any extent is cassiterite. In addition to the ores themselves, several other materials are often used to process and refine tin. These include limestone, silica, and salt.
Tin occurs naturally as a constituent of various minerals, however, one mineral, cassiterite (SnO2) is the principal tin mineral that is commercially exploited, with stannite (Cu2FeSnS4) being the only other tin mineral mined (in minor amounts). Approximately 600,000 tones of refined tin are produced every year.
