Tin was first replaced by aluminium in 1910, when the first aluminium foil rolling plant, Dr. Lauber, Neher Cie.
Tin is heavier than aluminum making it more difficult and expensive to store and transport. The heavy weight furthermore makes tin cans less sustainable as more CO2 is produced during transportation. Aluminum is more durable and stronger than tin.
High purity aluminum may be an alternative to Tin. Aluminum has similar mechanical properties, has been used as a brazing media and offers superior corrosion resistance.
Aluminum foil outperformed tin foil in cost, efficiency, durability, and conductivity, becoming a popular substitute in the following decades. Wartime rations on tin rendered aluminum the standard for packaging, and after World War II aluminum foil completely superseded tin.
From the reactivity/activity series, it can be observed that calcium lies above the tin metal in the series. So, calcium is more reactive than tin. This means calcium will be capable of replacing tin from its compound but tin being less reactive will not be able to replace calcium from its compound.
Tin has its benefits, but its limitations and drawbacks saw the rise of Aluminum as a better packaging material alternative. Aluminum tins and Aluminum bottles are gradually replacing traditional tin cans and metal bottles.
Conclusion. In summary, tin cans and aluminum cans offer distinct advantages and characteristics, catering to diverse packaging needs across industries. While tin cans excel in durability and recyclability, aluminum cans are prized for their lightweight design and suitability for beverages.
