A torn ACL cant heal on its own, but its possible to live with it (especially if you have a low-grade tear). But if youre an athlete or want to return to physical activity, youll need surgery to repair your ACL. Most people choose to have an ACL tear surgically repaired.
In general, there are three main graft options: a patellar tendon autograft, a hamstring autograft, and an allograft. An autograft comes from the patients own body, whereas an allograft comes from a cadaver donor. An allograft can come from patellar tendon, hamstring tendon, achilles and other ankle tendons.
Patellar Tendon It attaches from the knee cap to the shin bone. It is the graft with the longest track record and is consider by many to be the gold-standard for ACL reconstruction. In most circumstances this is the graft recommended for professional athletes and in any young active individual.
Three types of grafts can be used with ACL surgery: Autograft. Your doctor uses a tendon from somewhere else in your body (like your other knee, hamstring, or thigh). Allograft. This type of graft uses tissue from someone else (a deceased donor). Synthetic graft. This is when artificial materials replace the tendon.
With ACL restoration, it is not necessary to take a graft from part of your leg or use tissue from a deceased donor. An implant (called the BEAR Implant) is placed between the torn ends of your ACL which enables your own ACL to heal back together.
Very minor tears (sprains) may heal with non-surgical treatments and regenerative medicine therapy. But full ACL tears cannot be healed without surgery. If your activities do not involve making pivoting movements on the knee, physical therapy rehabilitation may be all you need.
A surgeon can choose between two types of screws for ACL surgery: metal and bioabsorbable. Metal screws can sometimes interfere with MRI scans and can be difficult to remove if further surgery is necessary.
