Antibiotics. The three first-line oral antibiotics for Lyme disease include doxycycline (Monodox, Doryx, Vibramycin, Oracea), amoxicillin (Amoxil), and cefuroxime (Ceftin, Zinacef). Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) administered intravenously is the preferred antibiotic for neurologic Lyme disease in the United States.
The exemption boxes on the back of the prescription form(s) have been updated to make it easier for patients to claim the exemptions to which they are entitled. The updated FP10 forms include a new exemption box U for patients who are in receipt of Universal Credit and meet the criteria for free NHS prescriptions.
Preventing tick bites Know where to expect ticks. Treat clothing and gear with products containing 0.5% permethrin. Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone. Avoid Contact with Ticks.
In areas that are highly endemic for Lyme disease, a single prophylactic dose of doxycycline (200 mg for adults or 4.4 mg/kg for children of any age weighing less than 45 kg) may be used to reduce the risk of acquiring Lyme disease after a high-risk tick bite.
To treat mild to moderate cellulitis from a tick bite, doxycycline can be given 100 mg twice daily for 5 to 14 days. To treat Rocky Mountain spotted fever as a result of a tick bite, the treatment is doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for 5 to 7 days or for at least 3 days after fever subsides.
For early Lyme disease, a short course of oral antibiotics, such as doxycycline or amoxicillin, cures the majority of cases. In more complicated cases, Lyme disease can usually be successfully treated with three to four weeks of antibiotic therapy.
Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skins surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Dont twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers.
The antibiotic can be given within 72 hours of tick removal. The bite occurs in a highly endemic area, meaning a place where Lyme disease is common.
