After removing the tick, place it in the provided container or a Ziplock bag with a paper towel or cotton ball moistened with water. Keeping the tick moist will keep the tick from drying out. Please label the container.
Improper tick removal may cause mouthparts to break off in the skin, possibly leading to infection or granuloma formation. Twisting off the head should be avoided, because this may cause the ticks potentially infectious body fluids to escape.
You may go through your health provider or you may choose an independent laboratory. In addition, many state and local health departments offer tick testing. Depending on where testing is done, these tick tests may check for other tick-borne diseases besides Lyme.
Cost: $50-200/tick for species identification and testing for up to 19 different possible diseases carried by ticks. Results are available within 3 business days following receipt of tick.
The PA Tick Research Laboratory tick testing process involves a three-step procedure called real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) that requires at least 24 hours to complete. When a tick arrives, we immediately work to identify it and determine how long it has been attached, when applicable.
