If Gmail guesses wrong, you usually end up with a screen full of gibberish because the message wasnt translated properly from one encoding to the other. And you can get gobbledygook if your browsers default text encoding does not recognize certain characters in the message.
If you prefer to use keyboard shortcuts for completing tasks in Windows 10, or you simply want a way to turn off formatting marks in Outlook on the fly without navigating menus, you can also remove or add the paragraph mark and other formatting symbols by pressing Ctrl+Shift+* at the same time.
Messages you have received If you see strange characters in a received message, click the Encoding button on the ribbon and select a different one, like Unicode (UTF-8). If this makes the text display properly, you may find it best to leave Use default encoding for all incoming messages not selected.
A valid email address consists of an email prefix and an email domain, both in acceptable formats. The prefix appears to the left of the @ symbol. The domain appears to the right of the @ symbol. For example, in the address example@mail.com, example is the email prefix, and mail.com is the email domain.
Based on my research, the issue about strange characters may be related to your encoding of messages, its suggested to check your encoding setting and change it to Unicode(UTF-8) to test if the issue has any difference(FileOptionsAdvancedInternational options).
Chances are, this option was enabled by mistake as its a setting that is easily activated by a simple key combination on your keyboard. To enable or disable field codes on Word or Outlook, simply press Alt and F9 and the same time and this will toggle the setting.
The short answer is yes, email addresses can include these characters, but with some exceptions. The two biggest factors to consider are hyphen placement and email service provider. Lets look at each in a bit more detail.
When composing an email message, you might see some symbols within your text. These are actually formatting marks, such as dots (for spaces) or arrows (for tab characters) in Outlook. Formatting marks assist with text layout. They do not appear on a printed message.
