Definition of Business Name Control Code. The business name control code is an identifier the IRS creates as a sequence of alphanumeric characters for a business based on its legal name and associated TIN or EIN.
Individuals (Forms 1040, 1040NR) The name control for an individual is generally the first four characters of the last name on the information return and the IRS uses the following criteria to establish the name control. The name control consists of up to four alpha and/or numeric characters.
For individuals and sole proprietorships, the name control consists of the first four characters of the primary taxpayers last name. For example, the name control for Arthur P. Aspen is ASPE. For estates, the name control is the first four characters of the individuals last name.
A limited partnership is registered with the state and federal government. Because the companys name is on record, it cant arbitrarily change its name. Even the most minor change should be accompanied by an amendment to the limited partnership agreement.
If your last name has fewer than four characters, your name control is your last name. For example, Jane Doe would have a name control of DOE. If you applied for your EIN using a business name, the name control is assigned from the first four characters of your business name.
Generally, the name control is derived from the first four characters of the partnership name. An ampersand () and hyphen (-) are the only special characters allowed in the name control. The name control can have less, but no more than four characters. Blanks may be present only at the end of the name control.
Partners may amend their partnership agreement at any time with the unanimous consent of all partners, ing to the Revised Uniform Partnership Act.
A name control is established by the IRS when the taxpayer requests an Employer Identification Number (EIN). The IRS creates the name control from the legal name listed on the Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number.
You may amend your certificate of formation by filing form L-102, Certificate of Amendment. This amendment form is available on the division of revenue website (see link below) or in your online account when you sign up for registered agent service with Northwest.
