Wash the logs You can also use a log cleaner specifically designed for log homes, such as CPR Log Cleaner by Sascho. Apply the cleaner to the logs with a soft-bristled brush or a sponge and scrub gently. Rinse the logs thoroughly with clean water.
In most cases, we recommend removing the old stain or coating by blasting the logs or wood with crushed glass. This media is as fine as table salt, silica free and 100% environmentally friendly. Once the old coatings are removed and the logs are brought down to bare wood, a new stain can be applied.
The only way to bring the logs back to a uniform, natural bare wood color is to use a chemical stripper such as our Strip Brite formula along with scrubbing and hose rinsing, or in conjunction with a pressure washer which scrubs and rinses at the same time.
Removing Finishes by Using Media Blasting A faster and also environmentally-friendly method of removing old finishes from log homes is the Blaster-Buddy. Instead of sand, the blast media used to abrade the finish off the wood is recycled crushed glass.
We recommend re-staining your log home every 5 to 7 years however, weve seen homeowners docHub the 10 year mark when consistently doing the proper annual maintenance.
Understanding the cost to strip and stain a log home is essential for homeowners looking to preserve and enhance their investment. If youre quickly seeking an estimate, heres a brief overview: Cost Per Square Foot: Starting at $28.5 per square foot. Example: A 2,000 square foot log home could cost $56,000.
Staining over stain is easy and works beautifully if youre applying a dark stain over a lighter stain on the wood. Remember, its the same principle as dying your hair! This rule applies to oil-based stains, water-based stains, and gel stains.
