Truncate the transaction log Right-click the database and select Properties - Options. Set the recovery model to Simple and exit the menu. Right-click the database again and select Tasks - Shrink - Files. Change the type to Log . Under Shrink action, select Reorganize pages before releasing unused space and click OK.
Setting the database in full recovery; Full recovery model means a database can be restored to a specific point, thus increasing the transaction log files size. Large database transactions, such as importing large amounts of data, can lead to a large transaction log file.
Control transaction log file growth To change the growth increment, use the FILEGROWTH option. A value of 0 indicates that automatic growth is set to off and no additional space is permitted. To control the maximum size of a log file in KB, MB, GB, and TB units or to set growth to UNLIMITED, use the MAXSIZE option.
You must back up the transaction log to allow log records to be released and the log truncated. If the log has never been backed up, you must create two log backups to permit the Database Engine to truncate the log to the point of the last backup. Truncating the log frees logical space for new log records.
Shrink a data or log file using SSMS In Object Explorer, connect to an instance of the SQL Server Database Engine and then expand that instance. Expand Databases and then right-click the database that you want to shrink. Point to Tasks, point to Shrink, and then select Files. Select the file type and file name.
