Most people have some surgery-related pain and discomfort for the first week or so. Not surprisingly, pain from knee surgery decreases with time. By the end of a week or two at the most, you should have very little discomfort. Swelling and bruising are also relatively common, and like discomfort, theyre temporary.
Abstract: Artificial ACL grafts are structural ties, designed to resist tension, but not designed to undergo biologic liga- mentization by the host. Strategically, an artificial ACL graft may be used as reinforcement to augment ACL repair, ACL autograft, ACL allograft, or tissue-engineered ACL.
An ACL graft after a reconstruction surgery is initially stronger, but over time becomes weaker, and eventually is almost as strong as your original ACL. These changes occur as a result of the bodys natural reaction to the new ACL graft.
A revision ACL reconstruction is a second surgery needed to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
ACL reconstruction usually takes less than two hours and patients go home the same day. But its still considered major surgery.
The two most common graft options use either two of the hamstring tendons or a part of the patella (a fancy word for knee) tendon.
Most often, surgeons recommend ACL reconstruction after it tears. For this procedure, the surgeon will remove the damaged ligament and replace it with a new one, called a graft, which can be made of tissue from the patients own kneecap tendons or hamstringsor from a deceased donor.
A torn ACL usually is treated with a procedure called an ACL reconstruction. Surgeons replace the damaged ligament with new ACL graft tissue either taken from the patients own body (tissue from the main patellar tendon or the hamstring) or donated from someone else (called an allograft).
