To use Gift Aid, you must have paid enough income tax or capital gains tax to HMRC in the tax year in which you make your donation at least equal to the amount that the charity will reclaim. The charity will ask you to sign a Gift Aid declaration confirming that you pay enough tax.
Claiming Under The Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS) For donations over 30, donors need to sign a Gift Aid declaration, which must be retained on file. But for small donations you can claim for donations of up to 30, with less administration, using the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS).
Rather than ask donors straight out if theyre a tax payer, ask them if they know that they can help the charity make an extra 25% on donated goods. Engaging in conversation and providing donors with a quick overview of how they can help is a surefire way to gain that extra revenue.
You must keep a record of declarations for 6 years after the most recent donation you claimed Gift Aid on.
