This video will show you how to quote a phrase from a source rather than a complete sentence. So first lets look at what we would do if we did want to quote a complete sentence. So Ive read this article about telemedicine, and it has a sentence I like: There are certain advantages such as reduced travel and increased access. So lets see what that would look like if I quoted the complete sentence. I could say, ing to Bishop, There are certain advantages such as reduced travel and increased access. So Ive given the author credit--his name was Bishop--and Ive put quotation marks around the sentence that matches the source. Ive used a comma after my signal phrase ing to Bishop, and Ive started the quote with a capital letter because its a complete sentence. Now some of these things are going to change if I quote just a phrase. I could quote just the phrase reduced travel and increased access. And so I could say ing to Bishop, some benefits of telemedicine are reduced tr

The examples use MLA format. Use a full sentence followed by a colon to introduce a quotation. Begin a sentence with your own words, then complete it with quoted words. Use an introductory phrase naming the source, followed by a comma to quote a critic or researcher.
You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
If you want to insert your own words, or different words, into a quotation, put them in square brackets [ ]. If you want to draw attention to an error in a quotation, for example a spelling mistake or wrong date, do not correct it; write [sic] in square brackets.
A quote should include: Your business name and address. The customers name and address. A unique quote number. The quote issue date. The quote expiry date. The description and prices of the products/services. The total amount of the sale.
In fact, if you can remember the three main rules below, you should be in good shape. 1 Place punctuation marks inside quotation marks. 2 Capitalize the first letter of the quoted sentence. 3 Include an opening quotation mark at the beginning of each new quoted paragraph.
Within quotations, use square brackets [ ] (not parentheses) to add your own clarification, comment, or correction. Use [sic] (meaning so or thus) to indicate that a mistake is in the source youre quoting and is not your own.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent. However, brackets should not be used to change the meaning of the quote.
Paraphrasing a source involves changing the wording while preserving the original meaning. Paraphrasing is an alternative to quoting (copying someones exact words and putting them in quotation marks).
