hello there skeptic squids and welcome to the lab workbench today iamp;#39;m just going to give you a quick little tour of how to prepare xps or x-ray photo electron spectroscopy sample holders for this amazing little machine behind me excuse the noise itamp;#39;s a loud environment and iamp;#39;m going to do my best to speak clearly and improve the audio in post so let me get this camera situation facing on the bench and letamp;#39;s get started and welcome to the workbench now the first thing weamp;#39;re going to do is glove up and the reason being is that you donamp;#39;t want the oils from your fingers to get onto the sample holders the reason you donamp;#39;t want the oil to get on the fingers is because itamp;#39;s going to cause degassing issues because weamp;#39;re using analysis chamber which is at a pressure of 10 to negative 10 millibar which is also known as an ultra high vacuum now we donamp;#39;t want to be hurting that vacuum so once we are gloved up we are go

Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.
XPS Sample Preparation: Press the powder into clean, high purity indium foil. Dissolve the powder in a suitable solvent and then drop cast onto the surface of a clean silicon wafer. Sprinkle the powder onto the surface of sticky carbon conductive tape or pressed into a tablet for analysis.
The intensity of photoelectrons emitted at the surface (Is) is determined by the Beer-Lambert Law: Is = Ioe-d/ where Iois the intensity of the photoelectrons emitted at depth d below the surface and is the inelastic mean free path of the electron in the material.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is a technique for analyzing a materials surface chemistry. XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material.
XPS Spectroscopy can detect and quantify all elements except for H and He and provide chemical state information, making it a powerful survey analysis technique.
XPS is routinely used to analyze inorganic compounds, metal alloys, polymers, elements, catalysts, glasses, ceramics, paints, papers, inks, woods, plant parts, make-up, teeth, bones, medical implants, bio-materials, coatings, viscous oils, glues, ion-modified materials and many others.
XPS is used to characterize the surfaces of diverse materials such as inorganic compounds (minerals), semiconductors, organic compounds, and thin films and coatings on natural and engineered materials.
The samples that can be analyzed by XPS are all solids ranging from films, powders to frozen liquids including inorganic compounds, metal alloys, semiconductors, polymers, elements, catalysts, glasses, ceramics, paints, papers, inks, woods, plant parts, makeup, teeth, bones, medical implants, bio-materials, viscous
