Can I change the AMI of an EC2 instance?

The answer is that you cannot replace the AMI for an existing EC2 instance. However, you can replace the root volume with a new volume which is basically the same thing. That new root volume can come from another EC2 instance.

How to replace an instance in an auto scaling group?

Enable the default instance warmup for a group. Verify the default instance warmup for a group. Find scaling policies with a previously set instance warmup time. Clear the previously set instance warmup for a scaling policy.

Can you rename an AMI?

Take these steps to change name in AMI When your registration is finished, proceed to the Dashboard. Add the AMI to start editing online. Open your document and utilize the toolbar to add all desired adjustments.

Can you transfer an AMI to another account?

Go to the AWS EC2 console and AMI section. Select the desired AMI. Next, select the Deregister option in the Actions tab. Select the Continue option to deregister.

You cant update the AMI of an instance without replacing it with a new instance. Typically you simply run the operating system updates - yum update / apt update upgrade / windows update.
