When quoting the Bible, you need to cite book, chapter, and verse (ex. Genesis 1:3) You also need to cite the version you are using (ex. KJV, NIV, NRSV, etc.). Use quotation marks for short quotes and block ste for longer quotes.
Do not enclose the direct quote in quotation marks. Double-space the block quote. Indent each line of the block quote by inch. Punctuate the quoted material with a period before the parenthetical citation with no ending punctuation after the parentheses.
A block quote is a long quotation, set on a new line and indented to create a separate block of text. No quotation marks are used. You have to use a block quote when quoting more than around 40 words from a source.
Ending punctuation always goes after the parenthetical documentation. Note in the example below that the period is placed after the last parentheses. Scripture states, For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline (2 Timothy 1:7).
When citing a passage of scripture, include the abbreviated name of the book, the chapter number, and the verse numbernever a page number. Chapter and verse are separated by a colon. Example: 1 Cor. 13:4, 15:12-19.
Parenthetical References: When you first refer to a particular version, include the name, a comma, and then the passage. Examples: (New Revised Standard Version, John 3.16) (New Jerusalem Bible, Ezek. 2.6-8) After this, only include the scripture reference, unless you switch versions.
Block quotations start on their own line. The entire block quotation is indented 0.5 inches, the same as the indentation for a new paragraph, and is double spaced. Block quotations are not surrounded by any quotation marks. The punctuation at the end of the block quotation goes before the citation.
Just use for the outer quotes in your sed and you can then use in the replacement. You dont want + unless you might have more than one consecutive and you want to replace all of them. If you do, use sed -r s/\\\+/\\/g .
