Following an abnormal Pap smear, your next step is additional testing. Dr. Tajzoy may suggest redoing the Pap smear to see if results come back the same. In addition to a retest, you can expect a thorough evaluation of your overall health.
If your Pap test is abnormal, follow up with your gynecologist immediately to discuss next steps. If the second, follow-up Pap test result is also abnormal, you might have a cervical biopsy, also known as a colposcopy.
Your doctor may recommend you have a Pap test more often than once every 3 years if you have: Cervical cancer or a Pap test that revealed precancerous cells. HIV infection. A weakened immune system due to an organ transplant, chemotherapy, or chronic corticosteroid use.
The HPV test has a higher sensitivity and negative predictive value than the current pap test. A positive HPV test helps flag if a person is at risk for developing abnormal cells of the cervix, so those cells can be detected and treated early to prevent cervical cancer.
Typically, your doctor will use the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP), or perform a cold knife cone biopsy as a minor surgical procedure. Be sure to always bring up any questions you may about you Pap test with your gynecologist.
False-positive results of Pap smears may sometimes occur. Recent research and new technology have led to more accurate tests, however, these are more costly and are not always covered by insurance. If a false positive result occurs, the doctor may recommend the use of a different test to confirm the results.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
You may be asked to repeat your Pap test more often for a short period of time, for example every 6 months. This allows time to see if the abnormal cells change back to normal on their own. Your doctor may suggest a human papillomavirus (HPV) test. You may be referred for a special examination called colposcopy.
