Is ACL replacement major surgery?

Minimally-invasive surgeries use smaller incisions than open surgeries, and generally offer faster recovery, with fewer health risks. However, because ACL surgery involves a complex reconstruction or replacement of a major tendon, it can be considered a major surgery.

How painful is ACL replacement?

Most people have some surgery-related pain and discomfort for the first week or so. Not surprisingly, pain from knee surgery decreases with time. By the end of a week or two at the most, you should have very little discomfort. Swelling and bruising are also relatively common, and like discomfort, theyre temporary.

Can you walk after ACL replacement?

By the end of the second or third week, patients usually walk without crutches. Sessions with a physical therapist usually begin seven to 14 days after surgery. During physical therapy, weight bearing is allowed if you did not have a meniscus repair.

What is the most common ACL replacement?

The two most common graft options use either two of the hamstring tendons or a part of the patella (a fancy word for knee) tendon.

What is the weakest point of ACL graft?

The weakest point, however, is the fixation of the graft to the knee. Unlike the patellar tendon, there are no bone plugs and so the soft tissue part of the graft must heal in the bone tunnels.

Can an ACL be replaced?

A torn ACL usually is treated with a procedure called an ACL reconstruction. Surgeons replace the damaged ligament with new ACL graft tissue either taken from the patients own body (tissue from the main patellar tendon or the hamstring) or donated from someone else (called an allograft).

Is ACL replacement a major or minor surgery?

ACL reconstruction usually takes less than two hours and patients go home the same day. But its still considered major surgery.
