The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does not offer a grace period for paying your annual vehicle registration fees. Be sure to pay your renewal fees on or before the expiration date shown on your current registration card, or DMV will charge penalties.
You bring a credit or debit card, cash, check, or money order to pay the fees; and. You bring your renewal reminder.
While our policy includes a 30-day grace period for expired registration, we cant provide roadside assistance for expired tags past the 30-day date as well as expired ID, license plates, and trip permits.
If you continue driving with expired tags for over 6 months, your vehicle can be impounded under California Vehicle Code 22651(0)(1).

If you continue driving with expired tags for over 6 months, your vehicle can be impounded under California Vehicle Code 22651(0)(1).
In certain cases, DMV may issue a TOP, which allows a motorist to operate a vehicle when all registration fees have been paid, but license plates and/or registration stickers havent been issued. Payment of use tax is not usually required to obtain a TOP, if all other fees have been paid.
Can I drive my car while waiting for registration in California? Yes, you can. The temporary tags will identify you as the car owner. But ensure to have valid auto insurance when you drive.
Your new registration and sticker will be mailed to you within 2 weeks. You can also review current renewal processing times on the Vehicle Registration Renewals page for an estimate of how long it will take for your registration to arrive in the mail.
