benefits, you must return the benefits received for the month of death and any later months. If the payment was received by direct deposit, contact the bank or other financial institution. Ask them to return any funds received for the month of death or later. If the benefit was paid by check, please do not cash.
If youre already receiving Social Security benefits and have a payee, you can ask someone else to be your payee. You should tell your present payee that you plan to ask someone else to help you. The person you want to become your new payee must file an application at a Social Security office.
When a representative payee dies, applicable regulations and SSA policy require that SSA will re-evaluate the beneficiarys ability to manage his/her own funds or select a new representative payee.
We cant pay benefits for the month of death. That means if the person died in July, the check received in August (which is payment for July) must be returned. If the payment is by direct deposit, notify the financial institution as soon as possible so it can return any payments received after death.
Contact the local SSA office and explain the reasons for wanting to change a rep payee. The SSA office should then make a determination and notify everyone involved. If the beneficiary knows who they want to be their rep payee, the beneficiary should also ask that person to complete the appropriate SSA form.
Provide the deceased persons Social Security number to the funeral director so they can report the death to the SSA. Look up and contact your local Social Security office. Or call the SSAs main number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to make the report. SSA only accepts reports of death by phone or in person.
Alternative Payee In Document is a field available in the general data selection criteria in the Vendor Master. If this field is enabled the payment technically can be made to anyone who may or may not exist in the Vendor Master.
