Getting VAT back without a VAT receipt If youre VAT registered, you can normally only reclaim VAT on purchases made for your business when you have a valid VAT invoice for the purchase. Yet there are some occasions when it is really difficult to get a VAT invoice from the retailer. Supermarkets are a good example.
To correct the matter, you must issue a credit note and a revised invoice. If your VAT invoice shows a lower amount of VAT than is correct, you must issue a credit note for the full value of the invoice. A revised invoice must then be issued to show the correct VAT.
If a business makes a mistake on an invoice they have already sent to their customer, they must cancel the invoice with a credit note and then issue a new invoice. The credit note essentially pays the incorrect invoice so there is no outstanding payment.
If a business shows the wrong amount of VAT on an invoice, it is responsible for accounting for the higher of the amount actually due or the amount shown on the invoice.
Invoices and VAT numbers if you are registered for VAT There are a few exceptions (such as if you sell second-hand goods under a margin scheme or sell zero-rated products), but as a general rule, VAT-registered businesses should always include their VAT numbers on their invoices.
If any invoices have been issued for services that were provided after the effective date of VAT registration and VAT has not been charged, a VAT only invoice needs to be issued to the client / agent.

HMRC will accept alternative evidence if you have lost a few VAT receipts of small value (i.e. the odd 10). In these instances, youll need to support your claim with alternative information, e.g. a bank statement or credit card, as proof of payment.
