okay Im about to put in some page numbers on a report that I have here and in order to check to see what the page numbers are doing right now Im just going to start with section tube here and just to see what happens I go over to the word page number while Im in the header and footer tools and I go down to the words current position and I click on one when I do this I see that I have a zero on the table of contents page and I have a zero and another zero and then I go to two and in any case all of the numbers arent working so what do I need to do well the first thing I want to do is I want to get rid of that page number because it actually doesnt work and then I have to take a look at my headers right now the first thing you wanted to determine is whether your headers are actually set up correctly and I can tell right away that in fact my headers are not how do I know that when I click on my very first page that is the cover of my report it says over here first page header section

Merging word documents without change in page number Make a copy of the document you want first and open that. Go to the end of the document and insert a next-page section break. With your cursor on that new page, format the page numbers to restart at 1 and unlink the headers and footers from previous.
Select Insert Header Footer. On the right side of the white area at the top of the document area, select Options Different Even Odd Pages. Type the text you want to appear on even pages. Select Odd Pages, and then type the text you want to appear on odd pages.
Controlling Page Numbers in Mail-Merged Documents Display the Insert tab of the ribbon. In the Header Footer group, click the Page Number tool. Click the Format Page Numbers option. Make sure the Start radio button is selected. Ensure the page number shown to the right of the Start radio button is set to 1. Click OK.
To ensure your pages begin with 1, go to the Insert tab Page Number. Select Format Page Numbers Page numbering Start at and add 1.

Click or tap the page at the beginning of a section. Select Layout Breaks Next Page. Double-click the header or footer on the first page of the new section. Click Link to Previous to turn it off and unlink the header or footer from the previous section.
Set page numbers for mirrored margins Double-click the footer area of a right hand page. At the top, the Header Footer Tools tab appears. Under DESIGN, click Different Odd Even Pages. Click Page Number Bottom of Page, and then click Plain Number 3. In the footer, select the new page number.
At the top of the page, before the first line/word, click on the document to place your curser. Then choose Page Layout from the top menu. Next select Breaks - Next Page. Now choose Insert from the top menu and then select Page Numbers and then choose how you want them to appear in the document.
