Short Text (formerly Text) is a simple data type. A field with this data type is limited to a maximum of 255 characters in length, which is controlled by field size.

In the upper section of the design grid, select the Date/Time field that you want to format. In the Field Properties section, click the arrow in the Format property box, and select a format from the drop-down list.
Change the data type for the LastName field to Short Text. On the Table Tools Fields tab, in the Formatting group, expand the Data Type list, and select Short Text.
Apply a custom format Open the table in Design View. In the upper section of the design grid, select the Date/Time field you want to format. In the Field Properties section, select the General tab, click the cell next to the Format box and enter the specific characters based on your formatting needs.
Replace the data source for the entire report Select File Report settings. On the right, in Report Settings, click the current data source (or Select Data Source, if no data source has been added). Select an existing data source or create a new one. If prompted, click Add to report.

Access opens the table in Datasheet view. Select the field (the column) that you want to change. On the Fields tab, in the Properties group, click the arrow in the drop-down list next to Data Type, and then select a data type. Save your changes.
