Many of you have questions around options expiration and how a trade might end. So in this video, well discuss what rights and obligations of options, being in and out of the money, how to avoid assignment, and a few risks you should be aware of. Hello, my name is John McNichol, and this is Comment Below. OK, so what are expiration dates? The expiration is when the option stops trading. This is typically going to be the third Friday of each month for standardized option contracts. However, there are other contracts called weekly options, that may expire each and every Friday. Now what happens to this option position depends on if one is long or short the option and if that option is in the money or out of the money. The buyer of the option has the right, but not the obligation to buy or sell a stock at a certain price within a certain time-- the expiration. They can do this at any time up through that expiration. The seller has the obligation to buy or sell a stock at a particular pri

When a Call Option expires out of the money: A call option is said to be Out of The Money (OTM) if the strike price is higher than the current market price of the underlying instrument. In such a case, the buyer loses the premium paid to buy the contract and the seller earns the profit.
American-style option holders have the right to exercise their options position prior to expiration regardless of whether the options are in-, at- or out-of-the-money. Investors can be assigned if any market participant holding calls or puts of the same series submits an exercise notice to their brokerage firm.
Brokerage will be charged on both sides, i.e. when the options are bought and when they are settled on the expiry day. Contracts expiring OTM - OTM option contracts expire worthlessly. The entire amount paid as a premium will be lost.
If your option is in the money at the close, Robinhood will attempt to exercise it for you at expiration unless: You dont have sufficient buying power. The exercise would result in a short stock position.
When a call option expires in the money, it means the strike price is lower than that of the underlying security, resulting in a profit for the trader who holds the contract. The opposite is true for put options, which means the strike price is higher than the price for the underlying security.
When a stock option is exercised, the call holder buys the stock, and the put holder sells stock. When options are exercised, the OCC decides to which brokerage firm, such as TastyWorks, the exercise will be assigned, and the brokerage in turn decides which customer will get the assignment.
If an option expires in-the-money, it will be automatically converted to long or short shares of stock in the associated underlying. Long calls are converted to 100 long shares of stock at the strike price. Short calls are converted to 100 short shares of stock at the strike price.
