These checks are used to prevent people working in roles where they may pose a threat to vulnerable groups. The Enhanced DBS Check for Volunteers will disclose any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings on someones record.
A DBS check has no official expiry date. Any information included will be accurate at the time the check was carried out. Its up to you to decide when a new check is needed. If the applicant has signed up for the DBS update service you can check whether their certificate is up to date online.
A Standard DBS check is suitable for certain roles, such as a security guard. The certificate will contain details of both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings that are held on the Police National Computer, which are not subject to filtering.
You can volunteer for as many hours as you like, as long as you can still provide at least 35 hours of care each week.
The DBS is in charge of two barred lists one is for individuals that are unsuitable to work with children and the other for vulnerable adults. If the individual has committed a serious offence, sexual assault for instance, then they may be added to both lists.
Volunteers may require either a basic, standard or an enhanced DBS check before they can embark on their voluntary position. Basic DBS checks may be accepted for voluntary positions however it is dependant on the role as to whether a higher level of check is required.
