- Weve all seen those photographers! Maybe as a guest at a wedding or as an assistant to our second shooter, weve all witnessed the frantic, frazzled photographer. They seem under prepared, rushed, stressed, a little out of breath. Maybe that photographer is you? But the key to being the opposite, to being more of that calm collected pro is what were are talking about in todays video, and thats how to go from being in reactive mode to being more proactive by putting together the perfect wedding photography timeline. Hey guys, todays video was inspired from a subscriber question who asked, What schedule is best? Can you please share your wedding day photography plan minute by minute? A role model would help lot so that I dont forget anything and my first wedding is as calm as possible. Generally, a faster shutter speed (1/125 or higher) and a smaller aperture (f/2.8 to f/9) help balance the flash with ambient light. Keep the ISO setting as low as possible (100-400) to minimize noise.
One of the crucial conditions is that the event space has white ceilings under 30 tall. What I do is I bounce my on camera flash onto the ceiling so I get a soft, diffused light. I generally bounce the flash at a 45 degree angle to the left or right depending on where my subject is looking.
Lighting Methods for Photographing Wedding Receptions Raw On-Camera flash. This is the simplest flash lighting possible. Remote Strobes. By far the most elaborate, setting up off-camera strobes requires the photographer to have at the very least 1 set of strobes. On-Camera Bounce Flash. Ambient Light.
Natural light can also look amazing. In general, I think most wedding clients prefer that look. Its hard to beat window light or light during golden hour. Ive tried to use flash power to create that look, but most of the time, it doesnt look as good.
Working with a low f-stop is key here, ideally 1.2 or 1.4. Shutter speed is also important, because youll want to let enough light in while still keeping your subject in focus. Practice ahead of the big day by experimenting with both to get comfortable with the technique.
So what is the 30/5 rule? Its the rule that accounts for things that typically take 5 minutes in real life that will take 30 minutes on a wedding day. It also means that 30 minutes on a wedding day will feel like 5 minutes. You may have heard people say over and over that your wedding day will fly by.
To edit 50 photos, it would take about 710 hours depending on the type of desired look. Many times we give it a day or two in-between just to give a fresh look and re-edit as necessary to make sure we get the ideal touch.
