Fluorescent lights have been traditionally used in the screen printing industry. They emit UV energy within the required wavelength range. However, generic fluorescent lights found in hardware stores may not provide the necessary UV intensity.
As previously explained, the ideal light for screen exposures is one that is rich in ultra-violet (UV) light. Fluorescent and halogen lights are low in UV light. But they are low cost to purchase and readily available. This is why most low cost exposure units have them as a light source.
To expose the screen-printing frame, any source of white light can be used, with certain limitations that Ill explain below, otherwise, a more professional solution would be to use a UV light source. The UV light source can simply be a standard UV neon light.
Why is this the case? Screen printing has a lot of setup and breakdown involved. To overcome the cost of creating screens and then setting up those screens on press (as well as breaking down and reclaiming the screens), screen printers need to print a lot of shirts to make the job profitable.
