UV exposure increases the risk of potentially blinding eye diseases if eye protection is not used. Overexposure to UV radiation can lead to serious health issues, including cancer.
UVC light technology is a radiation method that makes use of a specific wavelength of ultraviolet light to neutralize microorganisms. UV-C light is germicidal, which means it deactivates the DNA of microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, disrupting their ability to multiply and cause disease.
They are often used to disinfect and also treat water. Hospitals often use them to sterilize equipment quickly and effectively. UV lights are also used in your heating and cooling system. The UV light is used to sterilize the air even more than a simple filter can.
UV light covers a wavelength spectrum from 100 to 380 nm and is subdivided into three regions by wavelength: UVA (320 to 400 nm), UVB (280 to 320 nm), and UVC (200 to 280 nm) (1). Among them, UVC has the strongest germicidal effect and is widely used in the form of mercury lamps to inactivate microorganisms.
Prolonged exposure to UV rays modifies lens proteins, leading to cataract formation and worsening eyesight. Over time, cataracts can make vision blurry, hazy, or less colorful. Cancers of the eyelid, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are linked to UV exposure.
Furthermore, UV generates nitric oxide (NO), which may reduce blood pressure and generally improve cardiovascular health. UVA-induced NO may also have antimicrobial effects and furthermore, act as a neurotransmitter. Finally, UV exposure may improve mood through the release of endorphins.
UV can be associated with adverse health effects depending on duration of exposure and the wavelength. The adverse health effects that may occur are erythema (sunburn), photokeratitis (a feeling of sand in the eyes), skin cancer, melanoma, increased skin pigmentation (tanning), cataracts, and retinal burns.
Where UV light in the spectral region 180 nm 400 nm (UV-A, UV-B and UV-C) is incident upon the unprotected skin and eye for broadband UV light sources the UV light effective radiant exposure (Heffmax) must not exceed 30 J/m2 eff within an 8 hour period per day.
