To replace text or numbers, press Ctrl+H, or go to Home Editing Find Select Replace.
Use SUBSTITUTE when you want to replace specific text in a text string; use REPLACE when you want to replace any text that occurs in a specific location in a text string.
How to Use the SUBSTITUTE Function Select the cell that you want the substituted string to appear. That would be A2 for this example. In the formula bar, enter the formula below and press Enter: =SUBSTITUTE(A2, 98, 1, 1) Excel will now change the first 98 to a 1, changing the country code for the phone number.
With Excels Find and Replace, you can only search in formulas for a given value, as explained in additional options of Excel Find. To find cells that contain formulas, use the Go to Special feature.
Remarks. Use the SUBSTITUTE function when you want to replace specific text in a text string; use the REPLACE function when you want to replace any text of variable length that occurs in a specific location in a text string.
What is the SUBSTITUTE Function? The SUBSTITUTE Function[1] was introduced in MS Excel 2007 and is available under Excel Text functions. It will replace one or more text strings with another text string. The function is useful when we wish to substitute old text in a string with a new string.
REPLACE replaces part of a text string, based on the number of characters you specify, with a different text string. REPLACEB replaces part of a text string, based on the number of bytes you specify, with a different text string. Important: These functions may not be available in all languages.
