What does a good peer review look like? Start with a (very) brief summary of the paper. Next, give the Editor an overview of what you thought of the paper. The rest of your review should provide detailed comments about the manuscript. Remember that you have two audiences: the Editor and the authors.
If during the course of our review of your engagements, we find any issues we will discuss them with you, to ensure we have our facts straight and theres no misunderstandings. If needed, we will create a Matter for Further Consideration (MFC) and if warranted, a Finding for Further Consideration (FFC).
We have identified five principles of good peer review: Content Integrity, Content Ethics, Fairness, Usefulness, and Timeliness.
Step 4: Peer Review During the peer review process, reviewers thoroughly evaluate the manuscripts content, methodology, originality, and significance. They assess the strengths and weaknesses of the study, identify any errors or gaps in the research, and provide constructive feedback to improve the manuscript.
Most commonly the format is (1) Summary, (2) Decision, (3) Major Concerns, and (4) Minor Concerns (see also Structure Diagram above). There is also often a multiple choice form to rate the paper on a number of criteria.
In formal peer reviews, a rigorous process is documented, followed, and continuously improved with feedback from peer reviews as they are being conducted. Preparation before the peer review meeting is emphasized. Peer review participants have well-defined roles and responsibilities to fulfill during the review.
The peer review process Submission of Paper. The corresponding or submitting author submits the paper to the journal. Editorial Office Assessment. Appraisal by the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) EIC Assigns an Associate Editor (AE) Invitation to Reviewers. Response to Invitations. Review is Conducted. Journal Evaluates the Reviews.
A formal peer review is one which is led by a trained moderator and follows a particular structure. It consists of a series of tasks, including requirements walkthroughs, technical reviews, inspections, and a well-detailed report at the end.
