Yes, you can handwrite a 1099 or W2, but be very cautious when doing so. The handwriting must be completely legible using black ink block letters to avoid processing errors. The IRS says, Although handwritten forms are acceptable, they must be completely legible and accurate to avoid processing errors.
Tax Forms: If youre only signing your tax returns, blue or black ink is fine. On the other hand, if youre filling out tax forms by hand, only black ink can be used so the forms can be easily scanned.
Everything you write must be completely legible and accurate. Use black ink and block print (no script characters). You can type on the forms as well. Keep a copy of your information returns you filed with the IRS or have the ability to reconstruct the data for at least 3 years.
Writing with light ink: The IRS uses a machine to process the forms. You can complete a form 1099 on your computer, but if you have to write it out instead, make sure you use dark ink, so its easy for the machine to decipher.
1099 IRS Copy A can only be printed on the red-lined IRS form. 1099 Other copies can be printed on blank paper or on pre-printed forms.
There are no specific guidelines regarding the color of the ink that should be used when filling out Form 1099-NEC, as stated in the official instructions provided by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The guidelines just express that the structure should be finished using blue or dark ink.
However, the IRS said, Form 1096 is not required for filing electronically. ing to Blue Summit Supplies, you can handwrite a 1099 or W2. But processing errors can occur due to illegible or inaccurate documents. Many small business owners prefer to send 1099s through email or an online service.
The corrected form should be filed in the same manner the original was filed. If the original was e-filed, the correction should be e-filed. If the recipient of the original form has different information in their records, they will likely contact you for an explanation and/or correction of the Form 1099.
