you hi guys this is Mark Davis at optimum technology transfer welcome to you all in this video Im gonna take it look at using the replace function in Excel you may be aware if youve seen various other videos of mine here on YouTube you may well be aware you may have gathered that one of my favorite categories of function in the function library are the texts or string functions wonderful functions for cleaning or tidying up your data and Ive created quite a few other YouTube videos to illustrate exactly how these texts or string functions do work but its the turn of the replace function today now Ive got a series of order IDs now the order ID for each of these rows or records that Ive downloaded from saw the system are made up of two numbers followed by four characters followed by three other numbers thats the string that kind of makes up the order ID now what Id like to do is Id like to standardize so what I want to do is to replace the differing four characters kind of somew

=REPLACE(oldtext, startnum, numchars, newtext) The REPLACE function uses the following arguments: Oldtext (required argument) This is the text we wish to replace some characters. Startnum (required argument) The position, within oldtext, of the first character that you want to replace.

Click Format Cells. Click the Number tab. Select Text from the Category list. Click OK.
The easiest way to fix this error is by disabling the cell formatted as text option in Excel. This option helps in preventing the spreadsheets from converting formulas into text format automatically whenever they are copied or pasted into another cell. 1.
Convert number to text using the Excel TEXT function Add a helper column next to the column with the numbers to format. Enter the formula =TEXT(C2,0) to the cell D2. Copy the formula across the column using the fill handle. You will see the alignment change to left in the helper column after applying the formula.
Press Ctrl + C to copy the formulas, or Ctrl + X to cut them. Use the latter shortcut if you want to move formulas to a new location. Open Notepad or any other text editor and press Ctrl + V to paste the formulas there. Then press Ctrl + A to select all the formulas, and Ctrl + C to copy them as text.
