Each province has different rules about the time limit of a lien. In Alberta, for example, your lien is valid for 180 days from the date the lien was placed. In Ontario, liens are only valid for 90 days from the date of last on site working.
Anyone can put a lien on your house if you owe a debt, especially if it is attached to your home. This means that a mortgage is technically a lien on your house. Until your mortgage is completely paid off, the bank can seize your house as collateral if you default on your mortgage.
Your lien is only valid for 180 calendar days from the date it is registered on the land title 3. If you want your lien to last longer, you must file a statement of claim at the Court of Kings Bench and obtain a Certificate of Lis Pendens (CLP) from the clerk of the court and file it at Land Titles.
