Replace will copy ALL the files with the same name, even if they have not been modified.
Copy and replace them: Replaces items at the destination which have the same name. Copy and replace them is the default option when using the automatic operation mode. Dont copy existing items: Will not copy over items that have the same name as items in the destination.
Replacing a file does not actually mean writing it to the same place. Rather the reference to that file is replaced with a reference to the new one and the old one is dereferenced (deleted). The original file will likely remain on your hard drive until it is eventually overwritten.
