hello welcome back this is episode eight of everything you need to know about JPEG in todays episode we are covering chroma subsampling so lets not waste any time lets just jump right into it what is chroma subsampling if we look at a single color component of an MCU each one of these values represents a color intensity at a specific location in the image and each one of these values is also called a sample so sub sampling or also sometimes called down sampling means reducing the number of samples across an MCU and specifically were talking about chroma subsampling because it is usually only the chrominance data that gets down sampled like this so for the luminance you will typically always have all 64 luminance samples but the chrominance data can get down sampled to save space weve already talked about this idea a little bit that our eyes are more sensitive to subtle differences in luminance than they are to subtle differences in chrominance what this means is we dont want to s
