Click the Find Select button on the Home tab. Select Replace. Press Ctrl + H. The Replace tab of the Find and Replace dialog box appears.
=SUBSTITUTE(text, oldtext, newtext, [instancenum]) The SUBSTITUTE function uses the following arguments: Text (required argument) This is the text or reference to a cell that contains text for which we want to substitute characters. Oldtext (required argument) The text we wish to replace.
Use SUBSTITUTE when you want to replace specific text in a text string; use REPLACE when you want to replace any text that occurs in a specific location in a text string.
Difference between SUBSTITUTE and REPLACE Functions The SUBSTITUTE function is quite similar to the REPLACE function. However, SUBSTITUTE replaces one or more instances of a given text string whereas REPLACE replaces text in a specified position of a supplied string.
The Excel SUBSTITUTE function replaces a given substring with another substring in a text string. The syntax for the SUBSTITUTE function is SUBSTITUTE(text, oldtext, newtext, [instancenum]).
A substitute is a product that is comparable and similar in functionality to the current item. A replacement is a product that supersedes the current item. The concept of substitutes and replacements is widely used in different industries such as retail, automotive, and manufacturing.
How to Use the SUBSTITUTE Function Select the cell that you want the substituted string to appear. That would be A2 for this example. In the formula bar, enter the formula below and press Enter: =SUBSTITUTE(A2, 98, 1, 1) Excel will now change the first 98 to a 1, changing the country code for the phone number.
