the pap smear base cervical screening program was first introduced in 1991 and it has provided good benefits for women reducing cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates by over 50% but its now time to make a good program even better the most important change is the introduction of a new cervical screening test this is based on checking for the presence of the human papilloma virus or the virus that actually causes cervical cancer so by doing this were looking one step earlier for any changes compared to looking for abnormal changes in the cells which is what the pap smear does this is really great news for women because the new program is not only safer but it will protect against a further 20% of invasive cervical cancers the other piece of good news for women is that instead of screening 26 times in a lifetime well only need to screen up to 10 times in a lifetime and still have a safer and more effective cervical screening test for women under the age of 25 you just need to w

In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age.
Specimens from some women may also show reactive cellular changes, which is the way cervical cells appear when infection or other inflammation is around.
In pathology, the term reactive changes is used to describe cells or tissues that look abnormal as a result of changes in their environment. These changes can include infection, physical injury, medication, and inflammation. Reactive changes are benign (non-cancerous).
Reactive and reparative epithelial changes are commonly seen in cervical biopsy specimens and are characterised by enlarged, vesicular nuclei and prominent nucleoli. There is associated inflammation, either acute or chronic, and an increase in mitotic activity is often observed.
The HPV test could potentially replace Pap testing for most women. Its a better first test than a Pap test, says Dr. Long, who is not associated with the study. If your HPV test is negative, the chances of you developing cervical cancer is profoundly low for a long time.
With cervicitis, an inflammation of your cervix, your cervix appears red and irritated and may produce a pus-like discharge. Most often, cervicitis causes no signs and symptoms, and you may only learn you have the condition after a pelvic exam performed by your doctor for another reason.
Most of the time, the abnormal cell changes are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus, or HPV. HPV is a sexually transmitted infection. Usually these cell changes go away on their own. But certain types of HPV have been linked to cervical cancer.
ADDITONAL FINDINGS REACTIVE AND OR REPARATIVE CELLULAR CHANGES NOTED Reactive changes that are benign in nature, associated with inflammation (includes typical repair), atrophy with inflammation (atrophic vaginitis), radiation, an IUD, and other nonspecific causes.
