This is known as an option assignment. Once assigned, the writer (seller) of the option will have the obligation to sell (if a call option) or buy (if a put option) the designated number of shares of stock at the agreed-upon price (the strike price).
The answer is you can still short sell the stock even without having delivery of the stock. But the key question is when to short sell a stock. There are 2 options in front of you. You can either do short selling in spot market or you can do short selling in futures market.
When the option is exercised, the writer or issuer of the option is obligated to buy the option at the strike price. Exercising means the owner of the option is using their right to sell the option to earn a profit from it ing to the given norms while the option was formed.
When you sell an option (a call or a put), you will be assigned stock if your option is in the money at expiration. As the option seller, you have no control over assignment, and it is impossible to know exactly when this could happen.
What is assignment? An option assignment represents the sellers obligation to fulfill the terms of the contract by either selling or buying the underlying security at the exercise price. This obligation is triggered when the buyer of an option contract exercises their right to buy or sell the underlying security.
You have the right to accept or reject the offeras long as you know what the consequences are. Most people dont own enough shares to viably reject an offer, and therefore, wont have a big effect on how the companys management will react. In the end, you may even be forced to sell your shares.
As the put seller, theres a chance you may be assigned shares if the put buyer exercises the option. When this happens, youre assuming ownership of the underlying stock at its strike price. Setting aside the cash for this transaction ahead of time allows you to prepare for this scenario.
Updated November 2, 2020: A stock assignment agreement is the transfer of ownership of stock shares. It occurs when one party legally transfers their shares of stock property to another party or to a business.
