hi thanks for joining me im karen magruder and this video is an overview of the nasw code of ethics with our 2021 update i am a therapist and also a social work professor and i really saw that there might be a gap in student social work student education around code of ethics and that its a really helpful refresher for practitioners in the field to help consult and and be ethical practitioners and i also hope that this is a helpful resource for maybe studying in school or licensing exams but my disclaimer here is that this is primarily a resource that ive made for students students have asked me to post it online so that they can access it after classes end and have had you know helpfully helped people out in the internet world as well but i this is not an official product of the university of texas at arlington or the nasw or the aswb this is just meant to be a helpful supplemental resource based on my understanding but always refer to the code of ethics in doubt lets talk a littl

The first version was published by the APA in 1953. The need for such a document came after psychologists were taking on more professional and public roles post-World War II. A committee was developed and reviewed situations submitted by psychologists in the field who felt they had encountered ethical dilemmas.
in 1990, the code was modified following an inquiry by the us federal trade commission. this revision focused on principles related to solicitation of clients, fee setting and accepting compensation for referrals. in 1993, five new principles were added to the code.
On August 4, 2017, the NASW Delegate Assembly approved the most substantive revisions to the NASW Code of Ethics since 1996.
The APA Ethics Code The American Psychological Associations Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct, adopted by the APA Council of Representatives in August 2002, became effective in June 2003. Council amended the Ethics Code in 2010 and 2017.
The American Psychological Association (APA) promulgated the first Code of Ethics for psychologists in 1953.
Adopted in September 1952, the first APA code of ethics got published in 1953. It is 171 pages long, contains 310 individual rules and gives many specific examples. Subsequent versions of the code would make it shorter, less specific, though sometimes ambiguous, and corrected forgotten matters such as gender equality.
The first APA Ethics Code to include a specific principle or standard that directly addressed conflict between law and ethics was 1981. (See below.) Prior to that time, except for the 1953 code, there was a principle called Moral and Legal Standards.
Ethics codes need to be regularly refreshed to address contemporary issues facing association memberswhich today include complex subjects like harassment, bullying, racial injustice, cybersecurity, social media, and a host of other current conditions.
