Custom Dates Right-click (control-click on Mac) a date field in the Data pane and select Create Create Custom Date. From the Detail list, select the level you want. Specify whether you want the custom date to be discrete (Date Parts) or continuous (Date Value). Optional: Enter your own name for the field.
Verifying Date Fields If your dates arent interpreted correctly, take the following steps in order: Change the data type of the field. Create a calculation using the DATEPARSE function. Create a calculation using the DATE function.
To format a date field in the view, right-click (Control-click on a Mac) the field and choose Format. This will open the Format panel to the left of your view. Select the Dates field. When you format dates, Tableau presents a list of available formats.
The DATE and TIMESTAMP functions do exactly what you are looking for. If you have a STRING column where its format is like TIMESTAMP , you can simply apply it. Then, DATE will extract just the date and it takes care of the NULL values. Save this answer.
Replace Null Date with blank using the Alias Right-click on the dimension again (once its a string) and select Aliases. Set the Alias value for Null to be a space if you want it blank (or a -/dash/hyphen/minus/etc) Change the data type back to be a Date.
Here are the steps. Duplicate the date field you would like to use. Bring the duplicate out into your view. Change the data type of the duplicate field to a String. Edit the alias of the Null to TBD (or whatever you would like). Change the data type of the duplicate field back to Date.
If Tableau isnt recognising the field as a date type, right-click it in the left-hand pane and choose Change Data Type, then Date. Right-click on the field in the left-hand pane and choose Default Properties - Date Format to acquire the abbreviated date format.
To set the default formats, right-click (control-click on Mac) a date or number field and select either Date Format or Number Format on the Default Properties menu. A dialog box opens where you can specify a default format.
