the last major revision of the nasw code of ethics was in 1996. the need for a new code emerged due to the profession developing a wider understanding of ethical issues not addressed in the 1979 code.
The Code of Ethics was amended at the 1994 Annual Convention to make the aspirational objectives of the former first six Articles an integral part of the Preamble to ensure that the duties and obligations imposed by the Code, through its Articles, are objective, readily understood, and will be interpreted and applied
The range of penalties includes censure, removal from office, permanent disqualification from holding any state position, restitution, decades in prison, and fines up into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not all ethics violations are treated equally.
The Code of Ethics was amended at the 1994 Annual Convention to make the aspirational objectives of the former first six Articles an integral part of the Preamble to ensure that the duties and obligations imposed by the Code, through its Articles, are objective, readily understood, and will be interpreted and applied
The 2017 revision to the NASW Code of Ethics changed the title of standard 1.05 from Cultural Competence to Cultural Awareness and Social Diversity. NCORED was instrumental in bringing to the fore concerns that this change diluted the spirit and commitment of this standard during a time when culturally diverse
This code was revised twice, eventually including 82 principles. In 1990, several principles were modified after an inquiry into NASW policies by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.
In August, 2017, NASW adopted a revised code that now includes extensive technology-related additions pertaining to informed consent, competent practice, conflicts of interest, privacy and confidentiality, sexual relationships, sexual harassment, interruption of services, unethical conduct of colleagues, supervision
Ethics codes need to be regularly refreshed to address contemporary issues facing association memberswhich today include complex subjects like harassment, bullying, racial injustice, cybersecurity, social media, and a host of other current conditions.
