Why Fudging Employment Dates Is a Bad Idea. Despite many applicants lying on their resume and the perceived insignificance of a minor lie such as changing employment dates, you should still avoid it at all costs. In general, this can have a waterfall effect that trickles into other aspects of your life.
Only include employment dates and accomplishments that fall within the last 10 to 15 years. Emphasize recent training, certificates and work experience using the latest technology. A list of previous jobs and earned degrees should be near the end of the resume. Omit graduation dates if age discrimination is a concern.
Employers will keep your resume on file even if you are not hired, and they often go back through their records to find candidates for open roles. Also, mistakes in your dates of employment, job titles, or degree information can all lead to termination if theyre discovered after youve been hired.
Using exact dates clutters up a resume. Unless you are asked to provide exact dates (usually a feature only seen on online fill-in forms) use months and years. Employment dates expressed in years only is also acceptable and beneficial if you have short gaps in employment.
If the dates dont match what the employer discovers about you when they verify your employment history, it will be a red flag and could jeopardize your chances of getting hired. Keep in mind that you can include the months/years you worked at a company rather than specific dates of employment on your resume.
Unless the job calls for a huge amount of experience, most coaches recommend including the last 10 to 15 years of your work history, with dates, on your resume. Anything older than that can be kept off the resume.
Start Day, Month, Year - End Day, Month, Year (e.g 1st June, 2020 - 1st June, 2021) Month, Year (e.g. June, 2020)
If youre on the fence, theres no harm in sending an updated, error-free resume as long as you dont call attention to what has changed between versions. But the best thing you can do for yourself is proofread, proofread, and proofread some more before you submit your resume so you can avoid this dilemma!
