hi this is David a banach turtle with a quick review of a repurchase agreement or whats called a repo transaction now its just a secured loan so if we start here with the borrower also called the buyer and the repo or the one whos doing the repo then our borrower here is selling the collateral so this could be a bond to the lender the lender is also called the seller and the repo or the one whos doing the reverse repo so the borrower selling the collateral to the lender in exchange for cash so my simple example the collateral has a value of $100 here and so our borrowers borrowing $100 against this collateral and now heres the key thing our borrower is promising to repurchase or buy that collateral back in the near future as soon as tomorrow probably so if theyre selling that a spot price here theyre really locking in a forward price tomorrow and so if we skip forward one day this is tomorrow then our borrower here repurchases the collateral by paying the locked-in forward price

On the balance sheet, a share repurchase would reduce the companys cash holdingsand consequently its total asset baseby the amount of cash expended in the buyback. The buyback will simultaneously shrink shareholders equity on the liabilities side by the same amount.
A buyback will increase share prices: Stocks trade in part based on supply and demand, and a reduction in the number of outstanding shares often precipitates a price increase. Therefore, a company can increase its stock value by creating a supply shock via a share repurchase.
Examples may include government bonds, agency bonds, supranational bonds, corporate bonds, convertible bonds, and emerging market bonds.
Reverse repo example So, a money market fund might use reverse repo, where they purchase securities from a bank or hedge fund that needs cash temporarily. That allows the money market fund to earn a return on its cash after the other party buys back the securities for a higher price.
Why Buyback? Buybacks are clearly a more tax-efficient way to return capital to shareholders because the investor doesnt incur any additional tax on the buyback sale process. Tax is only applicable on the actual sale of shares, whereas dividends attract tax in the range of 15% to 20%.
Definition: Reverse repo rate is the rate at which the central bank of a country (Reserve Bank of India in case of India) borrows money from commercial banks within the country. It is a monetary policy instrument which can be used to control the money supply in the country.
Reverse repo example So, a money market fund might use reverse repo, where they purchase securities from a bank or hedge fund that needs cash temporarily. That allows the money market fund to earn a return on its cash after the other party buys back the securities for a higher price.
A reverse repurchase agreement (RRP), or reverse repo, is the sale of securities with the agreement to repurchase them at a higher price at a specific future date. A reverse repo refers to the seller side of a repurchase agreement (RP), or repo.
