Overwriting is a strategy to sell (write) options that are overpriced under the assumption that the options wont get exercised. Overwriting is used to generate extra income, especially with options written on dividend-paying stocks.
Calls: This would leave your account short the shares youve been assigned, but the risk of the position would not change. The long call still functions to cover the short share position. Typically, you would buy shares to cover the short and simultaneously sell the long leg of the spread.
Bear call spreads are also known as call credit spreads because they collect a credit when the trade is entered. The risk is limited to the width of the spread minus the credit received. The break-even price for the bear call credit spread is the short strike price plus the net credit received.
If you are writing a call option in a spread on a stock that pays a dividend, there is additional assignment risk if the call option is in-the-money and/or has less extrinsic (time value) than the dividend payout.
Once assigned, the writer (seller) of the option will have the obligation to sell (if a call option) or buy (if a put option) the designated number of shares of stock at the agreed-upon price (the strike price).
If that option is in the money (i.e., if it is put, the stock is trading at a lower price than the strike price, and if it is a call, the stock is trading at a higher price than the strike price), in order to avoid an exercise, you will need to buy back that option.
Assignment Risk With Put Credit Spreads Taking assignment on a put option means you will be forced to buy 100 shares of stock at the strike price. This means that if you have a short put option that is in-the-money, then you are at risk of being assigned.
Stock replacement is a trading strategy that substitutes deep in the money call options for outright shares of stock. The initial cost is lower but the holder is able to participate in the gains of the underlying stock almost dollar for dollar since the calls are nearly +1.00 delta.
