If you were to print a copy of your document, and ask a friend to proofread it, theyd probably mark the errors in red pen, and write any suggestions they had in the margins. Wouldnt it be easier if you could do that electronically? In Word, you canusing two features called Track Changes and Comments. Im going to turn on track changes right now so I can show you what I mean. To do this, go to the Review tab then click the Track Changes command. Now any changes I make to the document will appear as markup, which is Words answer to the traditional red pen. For example, when I delete text, it doesnt go away it just gets crossed out. When I add more text, it gets underlined. This lets the owner of the document see what changes Ive made before making them part of the final draft. You can also add comments in the margins by selecting the text you want to comment on then clicking the New Comment command. In this example, it would be best to address the letter directly to the hiring

Consider, then, a slightly more specific version: I would like to thank reviewers at [title of the journal in which the work is being published] and other journals for valuable feedback on this paper. This is better than the first alternative because it provides more information about whom the author is thanking.
Number your points and refer to page and line numbers in the manuscript when making specific comments. If you have been asked to only comment on specific parts or aspects of the manuscript, you should indicate clearly which these are. Treat the authors work the way you would like your own to be treated.
A response to reviewers specifies how the authors addressed each comment the reviewers made. The response to reviewers is usually organized by presenting reviewers comments one by one, followed by the authors response.
Ten simple rules for writing a response to reviewers Rule 1: Provide an overview, then quote the full set of reviews. Rule 2: Be polite and respectful of all reviewers. Rule 3: Accept the blame. Rule 4: Make the response self-contained. Rule 5: Respond to every point raised by the reviewer.
Response: Agree. I/We have, ingly, done/revised/changed/modified..to emphasize this point. [Discuss the changes made, providing the necessary explanation/clarification. Mention exactly where in the revised manuscript this change can be found page number, paragraph, and line.]
Example 3: Example response to reviewer comments Dear Editor, Thank you very much for the opportunity to revise our manuscript. We appreciate the comments and suggestions made by the reviewers. Please see our responses to the reviewers comments below.
It should start by thanking the reviewers for their time spent on the review, and the insightful, constructive comments which are going to improve the manuscript. Then, add a short summary of key changes. The key part would be a specific, dialogue-type list of comments and responses.
It is absolutely fine to disagree with a reviewers comment. You can send a point-by-point response to the editor explaining why you disagree with the reviewers suggestion. Make sure your response is backed by supporting evidence. If your viewpoint is justified, the editor will definitely consider it.
