[Music] i just had recently started this new job and i really wanted to work for this company its a big big company um and i applied as a seasonal seasonal employee but i worked full-time hours i worked 40 hours in four days so i worked 10 hour shifts um and so when i had got the news that my grandma was not doing well and she was unresponsive and the nurse said she had 48 hours to live i immediately tried to put in a its called a case you open a case to take a personal leave and you have to select which personal leave you need like the one i chose at first was the injured family member injured sick and you need to like they need aid so i tried to select that one and you have to select a certain amount of days and i believe i dont know i selected i cant remember the dates i selected but i needed a good amount of time of time off because the funeral was out of state so so i saw uh i believe i selected 14 days which the minimum is 15. the minimum is 15. so somehow i submitted it it w

bereavement leave following the death of certain family members. Beginning January 1, 2023, private employers with five or more employees are required to grant an eligible employees request for up to five days of bereavement leave from work following the death of the employees family member.
Grief experts recommend 20 days of bereavement leave for close family members. 4 days is the average bereavement leave allotted for the death of a spouse or child. 3 days is the average time off given for the loss of a parent, grandparent, domestic partner, sibling, grandchild or foster child.
AB 1949 provides eligible employees with up to five days of bereavement leave upon the death of a qualifying family member. The five days of bereavement leave provided under AB 1949 are separate and distinct from the 12 weeks of leave permitted under CFRA it is an additional form of protected leave.
We offer a minimum of five paid days of time off for the death of a loved one to attend funeral or memorial arrangements, resolve financial matters such as inheritance or estate affairs, or personal mourning. If travel is required, two extra days of unpaid leave can be taken, provided proof of travel arrangements.
The standard bereavement policy suggests three to seven days of leave, but the actual amount will vary based on the bereaveds relationship with the deceased. Most bereavement policies differentiate between the loss of a core family member versus peripheral family and friends.
Usually, bereavement leave allows leave time for a funeral or memorial service, any financial obligations that need to be settled (for example, inheritance or estate affairs), and personal mourning time. Some employers will be more flexible and allow for extra time if travel is required.
The second new law, also effective January 1, 2023, is California AB 1949. This law amends CFRA regulations regarding protected time off for bereavement leave. Covered employees who have worked at least 30 days are now provided five days of bereavement leave, to be taken within three (3) months of a qualifying death.
Its best to let your employer know as soon as you can if you need time off work. You should try to follow your organisations usual process for telling them. If you feel unable to contact them, you could ask someone else to do it for you. For example, a family member or close friend.
