Briefly, CPRA (calculated panel-reactive antibody), is the crossmatch of the measurement of a patients sensitivity to HLA antigens and the incompatibility of donated organs. A CPRA measurement gives your doctor an idea of the percentage of offered kidneys your body would likely reject at the time of transplantation.
The cPRA is used in the allocation of kidney and pancreas transplants. Patients with high cPRA levels get priority for transplantation because it is harder to find compatible donor organs in those situations.
Calculated Panel Reactive Antibody (CPRA) is a formula used to determine what proportion of deceased donors a potential candidate may be immunologically incompatible with and unable to accept organs from; in other words, how sensitized a candidate is.
PRA stands for Panel Reactive Antibodies. In order to determine whether or not a patient already has any specific HLA antibodies, a lab specialist will test a patients blood (serum) against lymphocytes (white blood cells) obtained from a panel of about 100 blood donors.
Calculated Panel Reactive Antibody (CPRA) is a formula used to determine what proportion of deceased donors a potential candidate may be immunologically incompatible with and unable to accept organs from; in other words, how sensitized a candidate is.
CPRA scores are determined by measuring the antibodies present in your system, and comparing them to data from tens of thousands of donors. This policy change introduces a donor data set more than 100 times larger than used previously.
Like PRA, CPRA is a tool for characterizing and monitoring sensitization. Unlike PRA, the CPRA provides a meaningful estimate of transplantability for most patients, because it is calculated from unacceptable HLA antigens that will preclude offers from predictably crossmatch incompatible donors.
