Dr Crosby: Usually a week is enough time for the baby to have fully transitioned to the new formula. You can monitor the babys symptoms that were the reasons a change was made. Some babies take to a change easily and some babies tummys need to adjust.
Some of the signs that your baby is intolerant to the type of formula youre feeding them are: Excessive crying or fussiness after a feeding. Extra gas. Very loose, watery stools (This is not always related to formulas. Dry, red, and scaly skin. Extreme fatigue or weakness. Forceful vomiting.
Dr. Young suggests giving it at least a week or ten days. Granted, Ten days is an extremely long time over a two month life! so it may feel tenuous, but its worth it to judge whether or not it made an improvement. Switching too rapidly doesnt give time for any healing to occur before an improvement can be observed.
Babies might get constipated, or poop more often, or have more runny poops, or be gassy or more fussy. It can take a week or so for a baby to adjust to the change but if the symptoms are overall not causing much distress, it is ok to give it some time.
To begin the transition with a 4-ounce bottle, you may mix equal parts of the old formula with the new formula for two to three days, then gradually provide only the new formula. If you are starting with a larger size bottle, you may transition more slowly.
Some reasons to switch formulas are if your baby has a food allergy or needs more iron in her diet. Switching may also help your baby if she has diarrhea, is fussy or hard to soothe.
Most of the time, babies only need a week to fully transition to a new formula but for some, it can be as much as 6 weeks. Your babys reaction to the new formula may include gas, constipation, and changes in your babys stool.
What are the Signs of Formula Intolerance? Diarrhea. Vomiting. Blood or mucus in your babys stool. The baby often pulls her legs up toward her belly because of pain. Difficulty with weight gain or noticeable weight loss. Constant crying and signs of discomfort.
