this will be a quick demonstration on how to use the field calculator to replace a string with another string a string here refers to a set of characters that can also include spaces and numbers for this exercise we have some parcel numbers that contain both periods and spaces in them we need to replace these characters since the parcel ids will later be used as part of a url to link to a property record card that uses this parcel number as a unique identifier the first step is to open the attribute table here we can see that the parcel id field in an empty field called parcel id web what we would like to do is replace the spaces and periods with underscores as a new field called parcel id web in order to replace the blank spaces with underscores we will use python and we will also do this to replace the periods with underscores either vb or python are okay for field calculations but if youre interested in furthering your knowledge in this area getting familiar with python is definite

Right-click on the Region Area pill and select Replace References. In the next pop-up, find the correct field from the new data source. In our case we are selecting Region and clicking OK. Tadaaa!
Right-click on the field to be replaced and select Replace References: A menu will appear that gives you the option of selecting what field to replace the old field with.
To add a reference line: Drag Reference Line from the Analytics pane into the view. The Line option is already selected at the top of the dialog box. Select a continuous field from the Value field to use as the basis for your reference line. Select an aggregation. Select how you want to label the line:
Right click on any dimension, measure or parameter in the Data pane and you will see the Replace References option. This will allow you to select a field that will replace any reference to the chosen column across your work. Its that simple.
In the field heading, type a name for the calculated field and then press Enter. Note: To change or edit the output of a calculated field, select the column. Then, select Fields Modify Expression.
Conveniently, Tableau has an option called Replace References that allows you to swap one field out for another all in one shot. In this example, I demonstrate what happens when the data source changes. You could also apply this method when you simply want to swap out all existences of one field for another.
Under Parameters, right-click the parameter and select Show Parameter Control. From the Data pane, drag the calculated fields you created to the Columns and Rows shelves. From the Data pane, drag a measure to the view. In this example, Sales is placed on Label on the Marks card.
Queries are a better alternative to Calculated fields because they do not store the value in a table.
