Infants younger than 1 year old need the nutrients in breast milk or formula. Breastfed babies over 1 year may continue to nurse, if desired, but you also can start offering your little one whole milk.
It can cause botulism in babies. unpasteurized juice, milk, yogurt, or cheese. regular cows milk or soy drinks before 12 months instead of breast milk or formula. Its OK to offer pasteurized yogurt and cheese.
Give your child plain whole cows milk or fortified unsweetened soy beverage in place of breast milk. He or she does not need infant formula or toddler milks, drinks, or formula. Learn more about cows milk and milk alternatives.
Whole pasteurised (full-fat) cows milk, or goats or sheeps milk, can be used in cooking or mixed with food from around six months old, but not as a drink until your baby is 12 months.
At 12 months old (but not before), your child can be introduced to cows milk. Before your child is 12 months old, cows milk may put him or her at risk for intestinal bleeding. It also has too many proteins and minerals for your babys kidneys to handle and does not have the right amount of nutrients your baby needs.
If you cannot find infant formula and you usually give your child a regular infant formula, you can give your 6 month to 12 month old child some pasteurized (not raw), unflavored, whole cows milk. Cows milk should only be given for a short time (no more than a week) as instructed by your childs doctor.
If you run out of formula and cant find any, in a pinch you can give oral rehydration solution (such as Pedialyte, Enfalyte, or a store brand) for a couple of days. Babies older than 4 to 6 months can also get pured (finely ground) foods.
Be sure to check the instructions on the formula packaging to make sure you are properly mixing the formula. Most babies will adjust to the new taste quickly and easily. How can I safely switch to a new formula? Most babies can change to a new formula without any problems.
